“The performances are alternately polished and rough, but always entertaining, depending on what the piece demands and what best demonstrates the instrument’s versatility and tonal range.” – StringsMagazine.com

We are always excited to bring you something new on the Lane Series, and this year it’s a brand-new classical instrument! The fadolín is a six-string violin that encompasses the range of the violin, viola, and most of the cello by using two extra strings: the low F and C (the “fa” and “do” in the newly minted word “fadolín”). Trio Fadolín’s focus is multifaceted, exploring the unique sonority of this remarkable instrument within a classical string trio context. The delightful Lev Zhurbin (who some of you may remember from his klezmer ensemble, Ljova and the Kontraband) and the other members of the trio - Sabina Torosjan (violin), and Valeriya Sholokhova (cello) - grew up in the former Soviet Union (Russia, Estonia and Ukraine, respectively) and arrived in New York as teens. They perform to tell the complicated story of immigrant composers collaborating with immigrant artists, showcasing places where cultures intersect.
