Symposium Agenda

7:15 a.m. - Registration Desk Opens – 4th Floor Davis Center

8:00 a.m. - Welcome

8:30 a.m. - Community-based Threat Assessment Teams: Partnerships for Safer Communities

Speaker: Dave Okada, President of the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP)

Description: As we have examined tragedies involving targeted violence in our communities, we have consistently found that silos of information have hindered safety professionals from identifying persons of concern and possibly preventing those tragedies from occurring.  Multidisciplinary threat assessment teams have been identified as best practice in preventing acts of targeted violence.  This presentation will address the added advantage of community-based threat assessment teams that further enhance the ability to identify persons of concern, gather information, and manage the situation to prevent that violence from occurring.  The presentation will examine a community-based model that has been in operation since 1998 in Salem, Oregon, and the dynamics of the team that has allowed it to be successful for over 25 years.

9:30 a.m. - Break & Networking

9:45 a.m. - Businesses Uplift Vermont and the Role of Businesses in Addressing Violence

Speaker: VT Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.

Description: The Vermont Network Against Domestic & Sexual Violence believes that together we can build a violence-free future. Businesses and employers play a key role in shaping that future. When businesses adopt policies and workplace cultures that recognize, respond to, and interrupt patterns of violence, it benefits our community wellbeing and economy. Businesses Uplift VT is a coalition of business leaders who have pledged to actively engage in learning and activism aimed at fostering a violence-free Vermont. This session will make the business case for addressing violence and discuss how businesses and institutions can join Businesses Uplift VT.

10:45 a.m. - Break & Networking

11:00 a.m. - Utilizing Digital Data to Enhance Your Behavioral Threat Assessment & Management Process

Speaker: Safer Schools Together

Description: Subject Matter Experts agree that nearly 90% of today's threats are communicated digitally and that an overall assessment of risk cannot be determined without looking at an individual's online activity. Digital Threat Assessment® (DTA) is an invaluable training tool for Safety/Threat Assessment teams as it supports the accuracy of our procedures/processes related to Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management. With DTA® training, participants will gain a better understanding of how to identify digital leakage, assess individuals evolving along the pathway to violence, determine the validity of online threats, best practices for proper data collection, and how to proactively reduce the potential of violence within your community. DTA® training provides participants with direct skills and tools that are effective and can be utilized by your teams immediately.
