A higher education fundraising professional with leadership experience in public higher education and private foundation philanthropy has been named vice president for development and alumni relations at the University of Vermont, President Daniel Mark Fogel announced today.

O. Richard Bundy, III comes to the University of Vermont from the Iowa State University (ISU) Foundation, where as vice president for development he provided leadership to the Campaign for Iowa State, an eight-year comprehensive fundraising campaign that recently announced it had exceeded its $800 million goal nearly a year ahead of schedule. The ISU Foundation is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to securing and stewarding private gifts and grants that benefit Iowa State University.

Bundy's responsibilities also included private fundraising programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine, ISU Athletics, ISU Extension, and the ISU Foundation's campus-wide Offices of Annual and Special Gifts, Corporate and Foundation Relations, and Gift Planning. Prior to joining the ISU Foundation in August of 2000, he was a major gifts officer for the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University. Previously, he managed Penn State's LionLine program as assistant director of annual giving.

Bundy received BA and MA degrees in history from Pennsylvania State University and an MBA with a focus on integrative management from Michigan State University. He completed the Harvard Graduate School of Education Management Development Program in 2005.

"We are fortunate to have found a person of Rich Bundy's talent and experience to lead our development team at a pivotal point in the university's advancement efforts," said UVM president Daniel Mark Fogel. "At a time when we are organizing for the university's next major comprehensive fundraising campaign and moving forward with our plans to establish a private philanthropic foundation as an essential step in building UVM's fund-raising capacity for the long term, he will be an invaluable member of our leadership team."

Fogel told UVM trustees at their October 29 meeting his hope was to have a new UVM Foundation incorporated in calendar year 2011. In addition to his role as vice president for development and alumni relations, Bundy will serve as chief executive officer of the foundation once it has been established.

"I am truly excited to join the University of Vermont at this moment in its history," Bundy said. "Private philanthropy will play an increasingly important role in public higher education in the coming years, and during my campus visits I was singularly impressed with the entire UVM community's commitment to reaching the institution's full philanthropic potential. UVM is a great university in a uniquely beautiful place with outstanding graduates and friends. I look forward to joining my new colleagues in January."

Bundy's appointment becomes effective January 1, 2011.
