Frequently Asked Transfer Questions

Degree Completion Requirements at UVM

There are limits on the number of credits transferred that may be applied to the degree program and major selected. In general, 30 of the last 45 credits earned for the UVM degree must be taken at the University. Consult the UVM catalogue for specific college/school policies.

How do I transfer my credit to UVM?
Body

Active undergraduate students should send their official college and university transcripts electronically to transfer@uvm.edu or via mail to:

     Office of Transfer Affairs
     360 Waterman Building
     85 South Prospect St.
     Burlington, VT 05405

Prospective undergraduate students should send their transcripts to Undergraduate Admissions and graduate students should send their transcripts to the Graduate College.

How will I know when my transfer credit has been added to my UVM record?
Body

You will receive an email when your transcript has been received and your record has been updated. You will also be able to see these credits online by clicking the ‘Transfer Credits’ link on the Academic Records card in your myUVM portal, and by viewing your degree audit.

Which of my courses will transfer to the University of Vermont?
Body

Credit will transfer only after you have been admitted as a matriculated undergraduate degree student.

Credit is not granted for:

  • Courses that were taken at colleges and universities that are not regionally accredited (or are candidates for accreditation)
  • Courses in disciplines that are not taught at UVM, such as criminal justice or law
  • Pre-collegiate or remedial courses such as reading improvement, English/math skills courses, or developmental courses
  • Personal development or self-improvement courses, such as career counseling as interpersonal relationship courses
  • Courses that appear on a transcript with no credit or grade assigned
  • Courses that reflect credit given for life/work experience
  • Courses that reflect credit given for co-op or internship credit
  • Courses that are Continuing Education Units (CEU)
  • Duplicate course material for which a student already has credit

Will my grade point average from my previous institution transfer as well as my courses?
Body

Only credit will transfer. Your GPA is calculated using only the grades you have received at UVM.

I don't want credit for courses I completed elsewhere. Must I submit the transcript?
Body

Complete official transcripts of all work taken at other institutions must be submitted as part of the application process, whether or not credit for such work is desired or expected. Students who fail to acknowledge attendance at any college or university in which they have been enrolled will automatically waive the right to have that work considered for transfer credit. They may also be subject to denial of admission, loss of course credit, and/or suspension from the University.

How is credit awarded?
Body

The University of Vermont is on the early autumn semester system. All academic course work accepted for transfer will be converted into semester hours of credit by the Transfer Affairs Office.

Can I transfer in credits (from either a domestic or foreign/study abroad institution) for a course in which I earned a grade of "PASS" for the Spring 2020 semester?
Body

This is a one-time exception for the Spring 2020 semester in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

All students will be granted transfer credit for a grade of "PASS" for credits earned during the Spring 2020 semester as long as the course is equivalent to a UVM offering. Any transfer credit approved to fulfill General Education requirements or elective credit will continue to count. Each UVM College/School will determine whether the transfer credit fulfills major or minor requirements. As a reminder, grades from transfer credits do not impact your UVM GPA. Students who earn a grade of "PASS" for a class that is a major or minor requirement may not be able to apply the credit towards their major or minor and may find that the course needs to be repeated at UVM for a letter grade. Review the College/School requirements for additional information and/or contact your College/School for additional guidance.

I once attended UVM but withdrew for personal reasons. I now wish to return to the University. How do I reapply?
Body

If you were previously enrolled at the University of Vermont as a degree student and have voluntarily withdrawn or taken a leave of absence, please complete the undergraduate re-entry application. You should not submit an application to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

How can I find information about credit by examination?
Body

UVM credit by exam

If you are a degree student, you may attempt (with the approval of your advisor and college) to receive credit for specific courses by taking a special examination. The fee for the examination is $50.00 per credit hour. To read more about the specific conditions under which you may request credit by examination, please visit the UVM catalogue or the Credit by Examination form (PDF).

What is the Guide to Transfer Equivalency Worksheet?
Body

The transfer credit listed on your worksheet is accepted at the University of Vermont. The Academic Dean of the college in which you become a candidate for a degree determines how the course(s) are applied toward degree requirements.

Here is an example of different ways a science course (either with or without a lab) might be accepted at UVM. Courses that include an 'L'  indicate lab credit; courses without an 'L'  indicate lecture-only credit:

  • PHYS 1400 is Equivalent to UVM course PHYS 1400
  • PHYS 1XXX is similar to a UVM Physics course at the 1000-level, but does not match a specific course.
  • PHYS 1XLX is similar to a UVM Physics course at the 1000-level with a lab, but does not match a specific course.
  • PHYS 2XXX is similar to a UVM Physics course at the 2000-level, but does not match a specific course.
  • PHYS 2XLX is similar to a UVM Physics course at the 2000-level with a lab, but does not match a specific course.
  • PHYS 3XXX is similar to a UVM Physics course at the 3000-level, but does not match a specific course.
  • PHYS 3XLX is similar to a UVM Physics course at the 3000-level with a lab, but does not match a specific course.
  • PHYS 4XXX is similar to a UVM Physics course at the 4000-level, but does not match a specific course.
  • PHYS 4XLX is similar to a UVM Physics course at the 4000-level with a lab, but does not match a specific course.
  • PHYS XXXX is similar to a UVM Physics course. Credit is granted, but not at a particular level. Normally, if the course is to be applied as an elective, no further review is necessary.  If you plan to fill a specific requirement with this course, you are advised to submit a syllabus or other materials to Transfer Affairs, 360 Waterman.
  • PHYS XXLX is similar to a UVM Physics course with a lab. Credit is granted, but not at a particular level.  Normally, if the course is to be applied as an elective, no further review is necessary. If you plan to fill a specific requirement with this course, you are advised to submit a syllabus or other materials to Transfer Affairs, 360 Waterman.

Only credits transfer; only UVM grades are factored into your UVM GPA.

Note: institutions do not automatically send us a transcript each semester.

All course materials submitted for review must be picked up in Transfer Affairs or they will be recycled/shredded.

Reason codes, such as GTL, Grade too Low, appear on your transfer equivalency worksheet online.

For courses assigned 1XXX, 1XLX, 2XXX, XXXX, detailed course syllabi may be submitted to Transfer Affairs for further review.
