BIO

I research the underlying mechanisms of anxiety, and use this knowledge to improve treatment options and outcomes for individuals with anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Although we have effective treatments for anxiety, many patients do not have access to quality treatments, others do not get well, and still others experience a return of symptoms following treatment termination. I use multiple methods, including psychophysiology, behavioral tasks, and cognitive paradigms, and draw from multiple disciplines (e.g., cognitive and social psychology) to clarify how biased cognitive processing is implicated in the prevention, maintenance, and reduction of anxiety problems.

In the Steinman CAT lab, we study:

  1. Mechanisms Underlying Anxiety Disorders and OCD (e.g., cognitive bias, intolerance of uncertainty)
  2. Perinatal Mental Health (e.g., how to prevent postpartum anxiety; mental health following pregnancy loss).
  3. Novel Interventions for Anxiety and Related Disorders (e.g., mHealth, Cognitive Bias Modification)

The CAT Lab is committed to fostering a community that celebrates and supports diversity, and where all members of the community feel safe and welcome. We reject bigotry, discrimination, and harassment.
