Postdoctoral Associate

Dr. Emmanuel Owoicho Abah, originally from Benue state (the food basket of the nation) Nigeria, is a post-doctoral research scholar at the Food System Research Center, FSRC. After completing his undergraduate degree in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering from the University of Agriculture Makurdi in 2011, he proceeded to work at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food security in Abuja, Nigeria. Due to his outstanding achievements, he was awarded a master`s degree and internship program in 2015, under the African Business Education Initiative, organized and funded by the Japanese government. He obtained his master’s degree in Bioresource Engineering at the University of Tsukuba, Japan. Due to his significant performance and potential for research in agricultural food systems, he was immediately admitted and awarded scholarship to continue his PhD in appropriate technology and science for sustainable development. During his PhD, he obtained additional grants such as the MEXT, and the Hanabatake grants. He successfully completed his PhD in Bioresource engineering, having extensive research experience in agricultural food systems, biomass/bioenergy systems, emission control techniques and environmental sustainability.

Privileged to join the UVM FSRC as a post-doctoral researcher, he will work directly in the Maple Sustainability Indicators project. This is part of the UVM FSRC's portfolio of five Sustainability Metrics initiatives. We are creating a framework to oversee and examine the economic, social, environmental, and management indicators related to the production of maple syrup.

Recently held positions:
• Research Assistant at the University of Tsukuba, Japan (2016 – 2021).
• Research Manager at Five Minutes Co. Ltd. Japan (2021 – 2024).
• Principal Agricultural Engineer, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Abuja, Nigeria (2012 – 2016).

Achievements:
• Authored and/or co-authored six peer reviewed publications.
• Fulfils the role of a peer reviewer for high quality journals, including Cleaner Productions and Science of the Total Environment.
• Explored new methodologies and collecting relevant data for research projects such as the rice sustainability project, the microalgae green energy project and the Ripmap post-harvest processing project.
