Diversity Research: Methodological Considerations, Relationships, and Transferring Lessons Learned

This panel presentation will highlight diversity scholarship in higher education conducted by UVM scholars with a focus on how their research is integral to policies and practices that impact a diverse range of students, faculty and refugee families. The panelists will focus on a number of themes as follows: a) underlying systemic and individual factors that can determine the success of first-generation students who hold intersecting and marginalized identities, particularly students of color attending a PWI in a rural majority-White state; b) opportunities for scholars to connect LGBTA students experiences and success outcomes to promote equitable policies and practices across the educational environment; and c) the relationships and power dynamics inherent in doing research with vulnerable populations and the benefits and tensions in engaging strengths-based and relational research models. The session will include opportunity for questions and discussion among participants and panelists

Panelists: Dr. Tracy Ballysingh, Dr. Jason Garvey, Dr. Shana Haines, Dr. Cynthia Reyes
