  • P. taeda (Needles and cone)

A medium to large, moderately tolerant tree on a variety of sites on the southern coastal plains and piedmont ("Loblolly" means moist depression). This is the major timber species in the south. Needles are generally 3 (sometimes 2) per fascicle, and about 7" long. Cones are about 4" long and ovoid-cylindric with an umbo armed with a stout, sharp spine.
