A medium-sized, intolerant tree in northern New England, the Lake States, and southeastern Canada. At maturity, the bark is orange-red, with large, flat plates and a clear, straight bole. Cones are about 2" and ovoid with an unarmed umbo. Needles are 2 per fascicle, about 5" long, flexible, and break cleanly when doubled between the fingers. Buds are sticky.
