A medium-sized, relatively intolerant tree on the extreme soutehrn coastal plains that exhibits rapid growth and is second in importance to P. taeda. Needles are 2 to 3 per fascicle, about 8" long, and tend to be clustered at branch ends. Cones are about 4" long with an umbo armed with a sharp spine.
