  • P. echinata (Needles)

A medium to large, moderately tolerant tree on relatively dry sites throughout the piedmont and northern coastal plain that is able to sprout after the main stem has been destroyed. Needles are generally 2 (sometimes 3) per fascicle, and about 4" long, often appearing in epicormic branches. Cones are about 2" long, and ovoid cylindric with an umbo armed with a small, sharp spine.
