  • F. nigra (Leaf)

A small to medium-sized, intolerant tree found on wet sites from the northern half of the eastern U.S. to southeastern Canada. The wood is commonly used in basket-making. Leaves are similar to F.americana, but leaflets are serrate, sessile and generally not purple in the fall. Twigs are similar to F. americana but buds are almost black and the first pair of laterals are distinctly below the terminal. Fruit is similar to F. americana but with an indistinct seed cavity that is covered by a wide wing. Bark is light gray, thin and scaly; often with a corky feel.
