A small shrub common in open, dry sites throughout the northeastern U.S. and the Appalachians. It is the alternate host for the sweetfern blister rust on hard pines. Leaves are sweet-scented and fernlike. Twigs are brown and pubescent. Male catkins are preformed. Fruit is a small olive-brown drupe enclosed in burr-like scales that mature in June.
