Contains 3 genera and approximately 50 species of shrubs and small trees, typically found on extreme sites - swamps, or dry, sandy soils. Leaves are simple, deciduous, alternate, and aromatic with minute resin drops. Species are monoecious or dioecious with both sexes in aments.
