Windows terms:

Alt-Tab: to switch between open program windows, hold the Alt key and tap the Tab key. When you reach the window you want, let go.

Ctrl-Esc: opens the "Switch To" Windows. Double click on the chosen program to go to that window.

Ctrl-c: copy

Ctrl-v: paste

Macintosh terms:

Program icon: icon in far upper right corner of screen. Click on it to see which programs are open. Select a program to go to it.

Close box: box in upper left corner of window. Click to close window. Does not exit from program.

Clover-c: copy

Clover-v: paste

Internet Tools:

E-mail: pine (on host via telnet), PCPine (in Windows lab), Eudora (a POP mailer, it takes your mail from the host and stores it on your hard drive), Netscape (a POP mailer), Pegasus (stores your mail on a local server)

Telnet: connects to a host (zoo) and let's you "remote control." Once connected to zoo, type pine for e-mail, lynx for a text-only look at the web, pico to edit files, or use UNIX commands to get around and work with your files and directories.

FTP: File Transfer Protocol, the generic name for programs that allow you to move files from your PC to and from a remote host (zoo). We use WS_FTP for Windows and Fetch for Macintosh.

Web browsers: any program that let's you browse web pages: Netscape 2.0, 3.0, MicroSoft's Internet Explorer, lynx on zoo.

Editors: any program that lets you create and save ASCII text. Use Notepad (Windows) or SimpleText (Macintosh) to create and edit plain text; use any word processor as long as you Save As plain text; use an HTML add-on (like Word Internet Assistant) or a word processor that let's you edit and save as HTML; or use an HTML editor (like Claris HomePage) that lets you create HTML.
