During spring break week, UVM Libraries staff and faculty worked diligently to move the collection of print periodicals from the second floor of Howe Library to the first floor. At the end of the week, the Howe Library News Hub had taken shape next to the reference desk.

The Libraries’ robust periodical collection previously lived tucked-away in a corner on the second floor of Howe Library. For years, UVM librarians have dreamt of a more visible location to display the collection and encourage interaction. Access to reliable and trusted information has always been important, and a pillar of the Libraries’ mission, but 2025 started to feel like the year to make it happen.

“Keeping up with the news is always important,” said Daisy Benson, interim director of Information and Instruction Services at the Libraries. “Right now, having access to multiple news and information sources is vital. We hope that the News Hub will encourage more individuals and classes on campus to use our collection of newspapers and current magazines.”

The collection is diverse and offers critical news as well as pop culture reading. While browsing the hub, you might find Vogue’s latest edition featuring an interview with Sabrina Carpenter about her Grammy Award-winning album, “Short N’ Sweet.” A few shelves away, you might also find an article in The New York Times about labor shortages due to deportations. The exploration doesn’t stop there—other titles you might find include: The Atlantic, El Pais, The Burlington Free Press, Forbes and so much more.

“In a world flooded with shoddy reporting, dubious information, and outright falsehoods, we are pleased to make good, well-reported news from multiple perspectives more visible and available,” said Dean of Libraries Bryn Geffert.
