The Dermatology Student Interest Group (Derm SIG) at the Larner College of Medicine, under the guidance of faculty advisor Santana VanDyke, MD, organized free skin cancer screenings for the South Burlington Fire Department on Saturday, January 11th.
Claire Baptiste, MPH, was inspired to organize this event through recent dermatology research and pitched the idea to the Derm SIG and UVM Cancer Center. Derm SIG co-leaders Claire Baptiste, MPH, and Amir Zafaranian planned the event and were joined by Larner College of Medicine students. UVM dermatology residents Mark Derbyshire, MD, and Sheridan Joseph, MD, assisted Santana VanDyke, MD, in conducting the skin checks.
They extend their gratitude to everyone who volunteered their time to serve this at-risk population. Special thanks to the American Academy of Dermatology for providing a screening toolkit and to the UVM Cancer Center's Community Outreach and Engagement team for supplying free sunscreen, sun-protective bucket hats, and educational materials. Lastly, thank you to the South Burlington Fire Department for allowing us to hold this event.
