Program Overview

Earn your master's degree and licensure to teach in just one year.

Our nationally accredited Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) allow you to earn a master's degree and become licensed to teach in your academic degree area. Teaching licensure options are based on your previous education/degree.

Learn alongside colleagues in your cohort as you complete a full-year teaching internship in a local school supported by our nationally recongized faculty and an experienced mentor teacher.

Vermont Teacher of the Year Tom Payeur works with a student on a hand-on activity at Winooski High School.

Teaching Licensure Tracks

Middle Level Education is for candidates interested in teaching youth at the middle level (Grades 5-9), with a strong focus on developmentally and culturally responsive educational needs of this age group. Graduate tuition scholarships are available for qualified candidates in all licensure areas (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies).

Secondary Education is for candidates interested in teaching in their academic discipline at the upper middle school and high school levels (Grades 7-12). Graduate tuition scholarships are available for all licensure areas (Computer Science, English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and World Language). The Robert Noyce Scholarship is available for qualified candidates with a degree in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth/Geosciences, Engineering, Physics, and Mathematics.

Choose Your Pathway

Traditional Pathway: If you already earned your Bachelor’s degree from UVM or another institution, or if you are a senior without room for 3-9 middle level education credits before graduation, you can complete the MAT full-time in one year or choose a more flexible part-time option.

Accelerated Master's Pathway (AMP): Undergraduate students (juniors or seniors) can save time and money by beginning MAT graduate coursework early.
