Program Overview

Online Coursework for Your Convenience

Complete all coursework online, with the exception of select field-based coursework for students interested in our Education for Sustainability specialization. 

Courses are available during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. The program includes 30 graduate credits (12 core credits and 18 credits of electives) emphasizing development of knowledge and skills related to educational justice, building criticality to transform education, centering humanistic pedagogies, and building a reflexive practice. 

Through our Accelerated Master's Pathway, current UVM undergraduate students can save time and money by beginning ASEP graduate level coursework in their junior or senior year.

Students admitted into the C&I program before Summer/Fall 24 can complete their original core requirements:

  • EDLP 6200 Collaborative Consultation
  • EDCI 6310 Society, Stress, and the Brain or EDSP 6300 The Trauma Lens
  • Research Course (recommended: EDRM 6300 Applied Educational Research)
  • Curriculum Course (recommended: EDCI 6008 Curriculum Theory or EDCI 6008 Critical Pedagogies)

Specialization Pathways (18 credits)

  • Education for Sustainability
  • Reading and Literacy
  • Resiliency-Based Approaches: Two Track Options: Trauma-responsive and Restorative Practices or Family-school-community partnerships and interprofessional collaboration
  • School Library Media Science
  • Individually Designed Program – for those who started before Summer/Fall 24
  • Curriculum & Instruction: Two required courses (EDML 6220 Social Justice Teaching & Advocacy and EDSP 6300 The Trauma Lens plus four courses or nine credits in approved electives (advisor will help you develop a plan of study)

ePortolio

During the final semester, all students (whether C&I or ASEP) will develop and defend an ePortfolio including an archive of work with reflections and a unifying introduction that connects with the program learning outcomes. This serves as your comprehensive exam.

The portfolio will be presented to Kathleen Brinegar, Cee Carter, and your peers who are also completing that semester. The date and time for this virtual meeting will be determined collaboratively at the beginning of the semester in which it will take place. Portfolio reviews and presentations cannot be scheduled during the summer months.

Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the content of one’s specialty area (reading & literacy, school library media science, resiliency-based approaches, education for sustainability, curriculum & instruction) and of the theories and pedagogies related to that content.

  • Apply criticality by making informed decisions on how to ensure equitable and just outcomes using instructional approaches based on research and on relevant learning theories.
