These are established programs that provide paid opportunities to conduct biologically-related research, and typically involve an individual research project. UVM students can earn credits for qualifying internship experiences, whether during the academic year or in Summer. These are organized through a student's college or department: College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS), Rubenstein School for the Environment & Natural Resources (RSENR). CAS’s Summer Internship Scholarship Program can provide students with up to $3,000 to help cover their food, rent, transportation, and/or other living expenses while doing an internship.

10/17 - NIH Summer Internship Programs (SIP) - various
This program is for college, graduate and professional students interested in exploring careers in research and healthcare. These are full-time research positions within one of the NIH Institutes and Centers (IC) in the NIH Intramural Research Program. Research groups are located on all NIH campuses, including the main campus in Bethesda, MD.
Summer interns work in a research groups directed by a Principal Investigator (PI). We offer research opportunities in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences with opportunities to explore basic, translational, and clinical research. Students interested in biology, engineering, epidemiology, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, nursing, physics, computer science, bioinformatics, and other health-related fields are invited to apply. Summer interns may not work in administrative offices or outside of the NIH IRP.
The SIP application will open in mid-November 2024, and close in late February 2025.

10/11 - International Research Experience in Marine Biology - Costa Rica
The application for the next NSF-International Research Experience for Students (IRES) in Marine Biology is open!
The NSF IRES Costa Rica program, Monitoring marine megafauna and coral reef communities using remote technologies, seeks to provide research experience to students in tropical marine ecology and autonomous technologies.
This IRES program takes place in Santa Elena Bay, located in northwestern Costa Rica. This unique oceanographic region is characterized by the seasonal Papagayo Upwellings, which drive high productivity and biodiversity in the area.
Program participation takes place every July. Starting in 2024, NSF IRES Costa Rica is funded for three years. Applications for the July 2025 cohort will close on December 15, 2024.

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Our program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks and community green spaces across the country.
