National Green Infrastructure Certification Program
Lake Champlain Sea Grant is hosting a green infrastructure training course in Spring 2024. We are currently seeking participants!
What is it?
The National Green Infrastructure Certification Program (NGICP) is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited certification program administered by EnviroCert International. The 35-hour course prepares workers with knowledge and skills needed to properly install, inspect, and maintain green stormwater infrastructure (GSI). Upon completion of the course, participants take an online exam. Passing scores earn a three-year NGICP certification.
When & Where:
Mondays and Tuesdays: March 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 (8am-12pm); online via Zoom
Friday April 5th and Saturday April 6th (9am-5pm); in person in South Burlington, consisting of field visits to GSI practices.
What material will be covered?
The comprehensive curriculum, delivered by a certified NGICP trainer, presents a background on watershed and hydrology fundamentals, information on GSI practice purposes and functions, installation methods and materials used, and assessment of function and appearance. Students will learn about many GSI practices including: bioretention, dry wells, and permeable pavement. The course emphasizes discussions on installation best practices and common operation and maintenance (O&M) issues and solutions.
Who can benefit from the program?
The program is designed to serve entry-level workers engaged in, or interested in, the installation, inspection, and maintenance of clean water projects. The course is suitable for current water resource professionals seeking professional development and interested in learning about GSI in more depth.
Cost:
$20 registration fee. All other tuition and certification fees (over an $800 value) will be funded by a grant from the Lake Champlain Basin Program. If you have concerns about paying the $20 fee, please reach out to jcsaraze [at] uvm.edu.
If you are unemployed or your current employer cannot cover your time in participating in the course, we have several stipends available, so please reach out to us for details.

Registration is limited to 15 people. We strongly encourage participants from underrepresented backgrounds and those who are new to or are entering Vermont’s clean water workforce. Preference will be given to entry-level/early career applicants with a demonstrated interest in developing a deeper understanding of all aspects of GSI. However, if you do not fall in that category and you believe this course would serve you, please apply and tell us why!
