Charles Holmes-Hope is a New York Times Gold Medalist & Award Recipient for Service & Leadership.  A nationally known educator & respected leader advocating for student excellence in higher education.  Charles has extensive experience working in the higher education community or the academy.

In June 2022, Charles was appointed Director for the Department of Residential Life at The University of Vermont (UVM), he is responsible for bringing a relational, strategic and coordinated approach to enact a renewed vision to the administration, leadership and management for setting annual priorities and goals for the residential life program and operations for both students and staff.  Before joining UVM, he served as the Director of Residential Life at Northwestern University (NU) where he provided direction for the department’s training, development, recruitment/selection, supervision of staff, diversity & inclusion initiatives, area programming model, etc.  Charles held several positions in campus housing: University of Connecticut (UConn) Northern Illinois University (NIU), Kent State University (KSU), University of Utah (The U), University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison), & the University of Hartford (UHart).

Charles has received several awards for his service in the field. Most recently, he was awarded the 2019 ACUHO-I James A. Hurd Award, presented annually to a housing professional color to honor & recognize significant contributions to the Association/profession; 2018 ACUHO-I Presidential Service Award, the highest honor the Association can bestow. Other awards: 2017 & 2016 ACUHO-I Leadership Service Award, 2014 NASPA IV-East Regional Mid-Level Outstanding Student Affairs Professional, 2012 Exemplary Service & Excellence, Kent State University; 2007 Outstanding New Employee of the Year; University of Wisconsin-Madison, etc. Charles is an alum of the prestigious Dr. Joseph F. Kauffman Administrative Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Kent State's Institute for Excellence for Administrators.

Charles is actively involved in professional associations such as the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) & the Association of College & University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I). He served 4 years as NASPA IV-East Regional Knowledge Community Coordinator & 5 years as ACUHO-I Chair, Professionals of Color Network. Charles served as the Host & Managing Editor for ACUHO-I’s special video projects focusing on the Association’s professional development engagement of its members, a project he led from 2011-2015.
