“junk” DNA
The function of much of this “junk” DNA is unknown:
97% does not code for any functional protein.
Some of this “junk” is important in gene regulation (promotors, enhancers, silencers, telomeres, centromeres)
There are numerous regions of repeat sequences. One class of repeated elements is the mini-satellites or VNTRs.
