Men and #Metoo: Possibilities and Perils in a Time of Change

In this interactive leadership workshop, Jackson Katz, Ph.D., will introduce and discuss a series of strategies for men's leadership on issues that historically have been considered "women's issues," with particular reference to highly topical contemporary debates around #MeToo, the concept of "toxic masculinity," the Gillette ad, and many other issues. He will share strategies for inspiring men to work in collaboration with women to change the social norms that tolerate or condone some men’s sexist, abusive, and self-destructive behaviors. He will describe the social justice educational roots of the “bystander” approach that he and his colleagues at the multi-racial, mixed-gender Mentors in Violence Prevention program introduced to the sexual assault and relationship abuse prevention fields in 1993, and argue for the need to engage men -- students, faculty, staff and administrators -- in robust and intersectional dialogue and debate about the ever-changing contemporary definitions of "manhood."
