Indigenous People - The Unsuccessful Erasure of Our Cultures

What happens when one’s name is taken away? When one’s identity, the link to the ancestors and the past, is also broken? Every aspect of life for Indigenous people was affected by the European cultures which settled here. Each of our many Nations had our own languages, cultures, social structures, spiritual practices, and connections to the natural world so different from those who came after. Indigenous cultures and lives were changed forever by those who could not speak our languages, viewed us though European eyes and perspectives, and who strove for us to conform to their way of life by using legislation and other means. What we are doing today is to rekindle and keep the connections to our heritages.
