Tips on leading a seminar discussion of a reading

  • The goal is not to summarize for the other students in the class, but to get others to talk about the reading. So come prepared with questions, not answers. Ask yourself, How can you improve the discussion that occurs in class? How can you get folks to relate what they now know and understand…..to what that person just said?
  • A good discussion needs a summary at the beginning, so generally it is a good idea to ask others “what is this reading about?” “What is its argument?”

1. What questions did the author ask? What were the findings? What was new in the research?
2. What are the interesting ideas presented?
3. How different is this work from similar work from other authors that you have read?
4. What have you learned from the readings?
5. If the research is flawed, what are the flaws and how might you approach the research questions?
