As
September came to an end, the
resignation of Staff Council President
Stephen Lunna went into effect (as noted
in a previous Staffline, Caleb
Gilbert and Laura Clayton have been
appointed as President and Vice
President of Staff Council,
respectively). In his resignation
letter, Steve had explained that
juggling his Staff Council role with his
work with housing veterans had become
unfeasible. He recently shared some
amazing news regarding this work:
Chittenden County has officially
made the list of communities
that have ended veteran homelessness.
A press
release from the Winooski
Mayor's office details the work
he's been engaged in for the past three
years. The next steps for Steve and his
team will be focused on bringing the
rest of the state to the same level, and
ending veteran homelessness statewide.
Congratulations to Steve and his
colleagues, from all of us in Staff
Council!

During
this unprecedented year, many departments
have temporarily stopped providing funding
for professional development opportunities
for staff. With that in mind, this new
section of Staffline will
highlight external opportunities
for training and development.
We'll feature primarily
free events, but will
also sometimes include others which have a
cost, with a friendly reminder that you
could potentially apply for the Staff
Council Professional Development Fund
to pay for it (the next deadline is
Halloween!).
To suggest external opportunities for us
to feature, drop us a line at staff.council@uvm.edu.

On September 29th, a panel
and discussion on racial justice in
Vermont's food system was presented as a
virtual webinar by the Susu Healing
Collective with support from the UVM
Extension Center for Sustainable
Agriculture.
Many of Vermont’s food system
organizations--from farmland access to
food access--would like to address racial
justice in the food system, but some are
just getting into this space for the first
time. There has not yet been a statewide
discussion on how to move Vermont towards
a racially just food system. This webinar
brought together facilitators Naomi Doe
Moody and Amber Skye Arnold of the Susu
Healing Collective and a panel of People
of Color who are part of Vermont’s farm
and food system to discuss what is needed
to address racial inequities and injustice
- and to work towards a just and thriving
system for all.

DINNER
& DIALOGUE: What is Freedom?
Thurs Oct 15 @ 7pm,
Online, FREE
In the midst of a pandemic,
political elections, and social
upheaval, we are being challenged
to examine what it means to live
as a civil society. How
do you understand freedom from
your own religious and/or
philosophical perspective? Dinner
& Dialogue is an annual,
six-part series that invites
students, staff, faculty, and
members of the Burlington
community to explore our own core
values in conversation with
others. Each month we will explore
and discuss one of the five basic
freedoms found in the First
Amendment to the U.S.
Constitution. October’s
conversation invites us to explore
how we understand the freedom
of religion in our
society. Learn
more or RSVP for this event.
