Our working model was used
in a lab that accompanied a freshman seminar class on nanoscience.
Before the lab, students were introduced to the concept of atomic force
microscopy using our larger demo model.
After being briefed on the delicate components of this smaller model,
the students were able to complete the lab on their own without much
difficulty. Leading up to the primary objective of two full
sample scans, students measured and plotted the z-stage to laser spot
positions and calculated the distance from the stylus to the laser
spot. They then scanned a total of .040" of the corrugated sample,
collecting 40 deflection points every .001". Once two full scans had
been completed, the students plotted their results in microns.
