To find out what mussels taste like you will have to ask a raccoon, river otter, or muskrat. Freshwater mussels are very tasty if you are one of these animals.

Raccoons wade into the water along the edge of streams and lakes and use their hands to feel around for freshwater mussels in the sediment (or dirt). However, river otters and muskrats dive underwater in streams and lakes in search of freshwater mussels. When they find a freshwater mussel they use their sharp teeth to bite into the shell and eat the mussel out.
