Learning Accessibility
There are lots of different kinds of learning disabilities as well as
attention deficit disorders. In this section of the class,
we will explore how accessibility factors into these types of disabilities
and what we can do to make our pages more accessible in this manner.
Some types of learning related disabilities and attention deficit disorders
affect the way people process information:
There may be issues with:
These discrepancies can hinder how someone accesses a website.
Some general things to keep in mind when creating an accessible site with
these disabilities in mind are:
- Give options to the material - if there are visuals, make written
back ups or provide interactive activities that people can
participate in even if just by clicking and viewing something new - a
new website, a new graphic or list of information given with a different
perspective
- Organize the material in a way that people can easily relate to it
and find things within it. You can do this by grouping things chronologically,
putting them into relevant categories, etc.
- Avoid clutter, unnecessary moving images, changes in color or pattern,
long passages of text, etc.
- Allow your site to be easily accessible with screen reader technology
- Label tables, images and links in an informative and clear fashion
- Make your text as clear and easy to read both contextually and aesthetically
Resources will be given at the end of class regarding how to make
your page accessible to persons with learning disabilities and/or attention
deficit disorders.
