    A low, sprawling, tolerant shrub native to cool, moist, shady sites in the northeast. Leaves are linear, 2-ranked, about 3/4", dark green above, yellowish below, petioled, and borne on short stalks which continue down the stem below the needles (decurrent). Fruit is a single seed, exposed at the apex, and partially surrounded by a scarlet, fleshy aril.
