A large, moderately tolerant tree, found on a variety of sites in the northeastern U.S., the Appalachians, and southeastern Canada. It is very important commercially, the largest northeastern conifer, and a common pioneer on abandoned pastures. Leaves are 5 per fascicle, 3-5" long, straight, slender, and flexible. Cones are about 5" long, cylindrical, with thin scales, and often covered with white pitch.
