Numerous evergreen hardwoods. The forest extends southward from southern Oregon to lower California, primarily in the coastal mountains.

Sclerophyll forest (on the better sites):
Several evergreen oaks, tanoak, California laurel, Pacific mandrone, and golden chinkapin.

Chaparral (on the drier sites):
Numerous evergreen shrubs including manzanita.
