A native of Asia and an ornamental in the U.S. with a shape similar to U. americana (vase-shaped) and relatively resistant to Dutch Elm Disease. Leaves are simple, deciduous, alternate, oblong to ovate, 2", and sharply singly serrate with an acuminate apex and rounded base. Twigs are glabrous. Buds are ovoid, acute, and divergent. Fruit is a small drupe. Bark is reddish-brown, becoming somewhat exfoliating, and revealing lighter inner bark.
