A small to medium-sized tree on a variety of sites in the southeastern U.S. Leaves are similar to U. thomasii but smaller (2"). Twigs are similar to U. americana but with prominent corky wings (after 2nd year). Fruit is similar to U. americana. Bark is flat, scaly ridges separated by shallow, irregular furrows.
