    A medium-sized tree in southern bottomland forests of the coastal plain, piedmont, and Mississippi delta region with uses similar to P. tremuloides. Leaves are ovate with a cordate or rounded base, crenate-serrate, and have a terete petiole. Twigs are stout, have an orange pith, and slightly resinous buds. Bark is furrowed in narrow plates and somewhat scaly.
