    A medium-sized ornamental tree native to Europe and naturalized in much of the eastern U.S. Leaves are 2 to 3-1/2" with sinuate or lobed margins, are dark green above, tomentose below, and a terete petiole. Twigs and buds have white tomentose. Bark is smooth, pale, greenish-white on young trees, becoming thick gray and furrowed.
