A small shrub common on moist, open sites. Leaves are alternate, simple, and generally serrate. Twigs are slender and leaf scars are raised with 1 bundle scar. Some twigs retain scales at their bases as in honeysuckles. Fruits appear in a panicle or corymb. Dried fruit is persistent through the wintter. Bark is papery.
