A small, intolerant, short-lived tree found at higher elevations in eastern Canada, the northern Lake States, northern New England and the Appalachians. Leaves are alternate, deciduous, sessile, glabrous, pinnately compound with 2"-4" lanceolate leaflets with serrate margins and an acuminate tip. Twigs are dark red-brown. Buds are dark purple, gummy, and somewhat pubescent. Fruits are clusters of bright red-orange pomes (1/4"-1/2") which persist through the winter. Bark is thin, light gray, and relatively smooth.
