A native to Asia and introduced to the U.S. in an unsuccessful attempt to establish a silkworm industry and later became naturalized. It is similar to M. rubra except M. alba leaves are more apt to be lobed. Fruit is generally white (but may be pink to purple). Buds are red-brown without the darker scale borders.
