    Small to medium-sized tree in moist, rich woods from West Virginia to Alabama. Leaves are deciduous, elliptical, finely serrate and up to 6" long. Flowers are showy, whie, hanging, and bell-shaped. Fruit is 4-winged, dry, up to 2" long, and remains on the branches into the winter. Bark is distinctive, scaly, and purplish brown.
