A salt-tolerant shrub or small tree native to Europe and Asia and also a naturalized ornamental in the U.S. Leaves are simple, deciduous, alternate, lanceolate, and gray-green with a silvery, scale-like covering. Twigs are often spiny with a scale-like covering. Fruit is to 1/2", elliptical, drupe-like, and yellow-pinkish with a silvery scale-like covering.
