    A small tree common on rich sites of the lower slopes in the southern Appalachians. Leaves are deciduous and about 12" long with a distinctly auriculate base and are crowded toward the end of the branch. Twigs and buds are glabrous. Fruit is similar to M. acuminata. Bark is somewhat scaly.
