A medium-sized tree scattered from mostly bottomland sites in the western Appalachians through the central U.S. Leaves are similar to A. flava; leaflets are smaller and more nearly lanceolate and with a disagreeable odor when crushed.Fruit has blunt spines and the bark has thick plates.
