    An intolerant tree from dry to wet sites in the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains with large branches close to the ground. Leaves are persistent (evergreen), elliptical, entire, and more or less revolute. Twigs are 1/8" and glabrous. Fruit is to 1" long with an almost black nut and turbinate cap. Bark is dark with small scales.
