    An intolerant tree found on bottomland sites of the southeastern coastal plains and Mississippi valley region. Leaves are deciduous with broad lobes with many mucronate tips, moderately deep, more or less u-shaped sinuses and axillary tufts below. Twigs are 1/4", ovoid, usually angled, and more or less pubescent. Fruit is to 1-1/4" long with a thick but shallow saucer-like cap with tightly appresssed scales. Bark is light-colored with ridges separated by deep, dark furrows.
