    A common ornamental in the south and usually found on bottomland sites on the coastal plain and southern Mississippi valley with spur-like branchlets similar to Q. palustris. Leaves are deciduous, linear-lanceolate, generally entire, and glabrous. Twigs are 1/8" and sharp pointed. Fruit is to 1/2" with stellate pubescence and enclosed at the base with a thin, saucer-like cap with tomentose scales. Bark is dark with rough ridges separated by deep fissures.
