An allelopathic, intolerant tree from bottomland sites of the coastal plains and Mississippi valley. Leaves are deciduous and more uniformly lobed than Q. falcata with lobe margins nearly perpendicular to midrib. Twigs and fruit are similar to Q.falcata. Bark is similar to Q. falcata but with flaky or scaly ridges.
