    A tree found on bottomland sites throughout the caostal plains and Mississippi Valley region and the most important chestnut oak. Leaves are deciduous, ovate, crenate to dentate, and often with glandular teeth. Twigs are to 1/4", acute, and pubescent. Fruit is to 1 1/2" long, sessile, and 1/3 enclosed in a thick husk with wedge-shaped scales. Bark is ashy gray and fissured or scaly.
