    A tree found on a variety of low valley sites in western CA and the largest of the western oaks. Leaves are deciduous with regular lobes and both surfaces present. Twigs are to 1/4", ovoid and pubescent. Fruit is to 2-3/8" long and elongate-conic with 1/3 enclosed in a deep, fringed cap. Bark is square plates.
